Walkers in Budleigh Salterton will, once again, be able to use the footpath alongside the River Otter from Lime Kiln car park after it reopened ahead of schedule following extensive repairs of a collapsed culvert.
In September 2018, the path was washed away when the incoming spring tide breached the river bank surrounding the drainage culvert.
Devon County Council closed the path as it was unsafe for public use and so that the culvert could be rebuilt and the path reinstated. The Environment Agency, East Devon District Council (EDDC), Bridge Civil Engineering of Chudleigh, and Clinton Devon Estates have worked together to re-open the path.
Clare James, Estates Surveyor for Clinton Devon Estates, said: “Through working in partnership we’re pleased to see this piece of the South West Coast Path re-open for people to enjoy once more and re-connect this beautiful stretch of the River Otter.”
Cllr Tom Wright, mayor of Budleigh Salterton and EDDC portfolio holder for the environment, said: “The early opening of the path is really great news for all those who regularly use it and now that spring is coming for our potential visitors. It also means that Budleigh Salterton, East Budleigh and Otterton are once again connected by a level path which has been important for the many enjoy the beautiful walk along the river to White Bridge and on to use facilities of the three communities.
“It also demonstrates the commitment of Clinton Devon Estates to the access for all to our wonderful environment.”
